Choosing the right metal mesh

Home & Garden Blog

Metal mesh can be incorporated into a wide range of products across a huge number of industries including the architectural, environmental, mining, manufacturing, food and drink and petrochemical sectors. With such wide variation in use, it's no surprise that there are a large number of mesh suppliers all trying to persuade you that their product is the most suitable fit for your needs. With such a wide choice it can be hard to decide which mesh to choose unless you are certain of exactly what you need.

Which mesh suits you?

Metal mesh is a wide-ranging term that covers a number of different types of products. There are woven and welded meshes as well as perforated metal available in rolls or sheets.

Here are some of the most common types of mesh, along with an explanation of how they are most commonly used. If you can't see what you are looking for on this list, then it is always worth speaking to your supplier as many mesh suppliers will be able to create a custom mesh for you.

Woven Wire Stainless Steel Mesh

Industrial stainless steel woven wire mesh generally comes in rolls of up to 30 metres. Woven mesh discs are commonly used for extrusion purposes in cable and hose manufacturing or when working with polymers. It is also possible for mesh suppliers to create screen packs by spot welding multiple layers of wire mesh to achieve the desired screen.

Hollander weave and stainless steel bolting cloth

While woven mesh is popular for extrusion purposes, stainless steel bolting cloth boasts an increased open area which makes it suitable for higher capacity sifting. Hollander weave can commonly be found providing fine filtration of liquids.

Welded wire mesh

A welded wire mesh is always of the highest standard and recommended by mesh suppliers for use in almost any industry from the food and beverage to industrial uses. If you have a specific use in mind, talking through your needs with your mesh suppliers will allow them to recommend the most appropriate welded wire mesh for your application.

Do you need a custom designed mesh?

Whether you need a strainer, a basket or a vibrating screen, there are times where the available options don't seem to fit. If you can't find what you are looking for, then don't be afraid to ask for a custom design. Most mesh suppliers can adjust the specifications of the product to create the perfect metal mesh for your situation.

Creating A Child-Friendly Outdoor Space

As the parent of five children, I've picked up some tips over the years when it comes to childproofing the garden and creating an outdoor space that's safe and can be enjoyed by everyone. I started focussing on safety in the garden after my first child had an accident that could have been prevented. Thankfully, they recovered pretty quickly, but I realised how easy it is for young children to get hurt when playing outdoors. I started this blog to share what I've learned as a parent, and topics I post about include creating safe swimming pools, identifying toxic garden plants, choosing child-safe gates and maintaining outdoor play equipment. I hope you find my blog interesting and useful.
